How to Get the Most Out of Your Life as a UW Graduate Student

Read Time:3 Minute, 40 Second

If your undergraduate career is wrapping up and you are looking at graduate school, you may be planning to enroll at the University of Washington in Seattle and live in UW off campus housing. With respected programs in the social sciences, engineering, computer science, and other fields, it may be a natural fit for your academic and professional goals. There will be more to your life as a UW graduate student than just studying, however, so let’s take a look at how you can best maximize your time both on and off the University of Washington’s campus.

As a UW grad student, where you live matters, as your home is both a refuge of sorts as well as the foundation for everything you do each day. While some students prefer to live on-campus, others like to live in UW off campus housing since this puts a little space between them and academic life. Grad students already had the on-campus experience when they were undergrads, so they like the independence that comes from living off-campus. UW graduate housing can also be more affordable, especially if you have a roommate. Studios, which offer plenty of room for one person, begin at $1,000/month while two-bedroom apartments start at $2,600/month for two people. The units are fully furnished, making it easy on move-in day. You can also find some really good deals for University of Washington summer housing, when prices sometimes go up. Off-campus UW graduate apartments can be the right choice for students who prioritize value, autonomy, and space.

As a Husky, you will want to take advantage of all the exciting opportunities to meet diverse people and simply have some fun. If you envision yourself as being Spiderman, check out Crags Climbing Center, which boasts over 5,000 square-feet of climbing area, including 23 top rope stations that are up to 44 feet in height. Need something to do on a Friday night? Archery and roller skating are highly popular and a great way to let off some steam after a long week of classes. Intramural sports, meditation and yoga, golf, martial arts, and other activities all offer the chance for you to meet other Huskies and to enrich your life as a University of Washington graduate student.

While it may seem like graduation will never arrive when you are knee-deep in books and papers, the day you leave UW and move out of your UW off campus housing will come eventually. A valuable resource is the Career & Internship Center at the University of Washington. As a Husky, you have access to coaching, workshops, events, and the Husky Career Closet as well as other tools that can prepare you and your resume for life after UW graduate school. Past workshops have included Preparing for an Interview, Finding Purpose: What Career Path Is Right for You?, Successful Job Searching, and Huskies in Population Health: Alumni Panel Discussion. The information that you learn can give you more confidence as you prepare for entering the workforce post-graduate school.

The University of Washington also has strong medical and counseling services for all students. While you will hopefully never need them, they may be useful. For students, staff, and faculty who may be struggling with paying for food, the UW Food Pantry provides groceries and seasonal fresh produce at no cost. The University of Washington also provides free, short-term counseling service to current students who have paid the Services & Activities fee. For UW Seattle students, same-day care is available for urgent medical needs. Dental care is also offered, so please take advantage of these resources while you are a UW graduate student.

As always, the more you engage with the University of Washington Seattle community, including your neighbors at your UW off campus housing, the more you will enjoy your time as a UW graduate student. So, remember to see each day as an adventure, one that will only lead you to even better things to come.
