Imax says ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ scored highest box office for an animated film in weekend debut
Imax Corp. said Monday it chalked up $21.6 million in box office receipts from the new “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” in its opening weekend, marking the highest take for an animated film. The movie took in $16.6 million in North America, the most for an animated film in that region too. It marked the top animated debut in 22 international markets, including the U.K., Ireland, Germany, Sweden and the Netherlands, along with Brazil and Mexico, said the big screen film theater operator. Imax’ stock has gained 17% in the last 12 months, while the S&P 500 has fallen 9%.
