: Southern Co. Vogtle Unit 3 plant placed into service after 14-year construction process

Southern Co. SO said Monday its Georgia Power Co. unit notified the Georgia Public Service Commission that the nuclear Plant Vogtle Unit 3 reached commercial operation and has been placed in service. The milestone comes 14 years after construction on the plant began in 2009. The plant was the first new nuclear project in the U.S. since the Three Mile Island accident in 1979 but faced delays including the 2017 bankruptcy of plant maker Westinghouse. The Vogtle generating station is located near Augusta, Ga. Southern Co.’s stock is up 1.3% in 2023 compared to a 19.3% increase in the S&P 500 SPX.
