Stocks open mostly lower as investors prepare to close out turbulent January

Stocks opened mostly lower Monday, with major indexes on track to close out January with hefty losses as investors prepare for an expected series of rate increases from the Federal Reserve. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 172 points, or 0.5%, to 34,554, while the S&P 500 was off 0.2% at 4,422. The Nasdaq Composite edged up 0.2% to 13,798. The Dow was headed for a 4.9% monthly fall, while the S&P 500 was off 7.2%. The Nasdaq Composite , made up of rate-sensitive growth stocks, was on track for a nearly 12% January slide.
