: Yellen says debt-ceiling brinksmanship ‘cannot be normalized’

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen will tell members of Congress that the U.S. “came dangerously close to the line” in the recent battle over raising the debt ceiling, and urge lawmakers not to wait until the last minute in future discussions about the limit. “While we were able to avoid default, the United States once again came dangerously close to the line,” she said in remarks prepared for delivery to a House Financial Services Committee hearing scheduled for Tuesday. “This cannot be normalized as the way we do business in Washington,” she said. President Joe Biden signed legislation on June 3 that lifts the country’s debt ceiling. Since then, House and Senate Democrats have introduced a bill that would overhaul the debt-ceiling process, empowering the Treasury Department to keep paying bills for the country’s obligations.
