: Caterpillar’s stock surge is a big reason why the Dow is up

Shares of Caterpillar Inc. CAT shot up 5.1% into record territory in morning trading Tuesday, enough to pace the Dow Jones Industrial Average’s DJIA gainers, after the construction- and mining-equipment maker reported big profit and revenue beats. The stock’s price gain of $13.55 was adding about 89 points to the Dow, which is a price-weighted index, as the Dow rose 75 points, or 0.2%, with just 12 of 30 components trading higher. The Dow’s gain, as a results of Caterpillar’s stock, bucked the weakness in the broader stock market, as the market-capitalization-weighted S&P 500 SPX fell 0.2% and the Nasdaq Composite COMP shed 0.5%.
