The global tally of confirmed cases of COVID-19 climbed above 500 million on Tuesday, according to data aggregated by Johns Hopkins University. The official death toll is above 6.18 million, the data show. The U.S. continues to lead the world with 80.5 million cases and 986,040 fatalities. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said earlier that the BA.2 subvariant of the highly infectious omicron variant now makes up 85.9% of U.S. cases, a sign of how fast it can spread. BA.2 is also the dominant strain globally, as the World Health Organization confirmed last week.
