Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer on Tuesday promised to hold a vote on legislation to codify the right to an abortion into federal law, and the New York Democrat blasted the Supreme Court’s conservative majority for looking poised to overturn Roe v. Wade. “Now that the court is poised to strike down Roe, it is my intention for the Senate to hold a vote on legislation to codify the right to an abortion in law,” Schumer said in a floor speech. A number of Democratic lawmakers have called on Monday night and Tuesday morning for the codification of the right to abortion, though such pushes have not succeeded, with an effort in February getting 48 votes in the Senate. Schumer also said: “The Republican-appointed justices reported votes to overturn Roe v. Wade will go down as an abomination — one of the worst, most damaging decisions in modern history.”
