House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Tuesday said the U.S. must “stand by” Taiwan as she arrived on the island amid high tensions with China, which considers it a renegade province. Writing in the Washington Post, the California Democrat said Taiwan’s democracy is “under threat,” citing increased Chinese patrols of bombers, fighter jets and surveillance aircraft near and over Taiwan’s air defense zone. Pelosi arrived in Taiwan on Tuesday evening local time, amid warnings from China that her visit could trigger “serious consequences.” She’s the first House speaker to visit Taiwan in 25 years. U.S. stocks fell Tuesday morning, as analysts blamed rising tensions between the U.S. and China as Pelosi prepared to visit Taiwan. “In the face of the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) accelerating aggression, our congressional delegation’s visit should be seen as an unequivocal statement that America stands with Taiwan, our democratic partner, as it defends itself and its freedom,” Pelosi wrote in the Post.
